This and That: Varin’s Book Release Special

This week, we received information that Danny Varin has authored a book. “Smokescreen: The Tony Stewart-Kevin Ward, Jr. Incident” by Daniel Robert Varin is obtainable in paperback on Amazon. According to the Amazon introduction for the book, racer Danny Varin was ideally placed to witness the tragic events that occurred on August 9th, 2014, which claimed the life of young Kevin Ward Jr. We conversed with Danny, and although prior to the book’s release this week, he had been reluctant to discuss much about what transpired that night, he has been grappling with his feelings and emotions ever since. He was running directly behind Tony Stewart. He witnessed what happened, and although it was believed that night before he left the track that Kevin had lost his life, it struck Danny the hardest the next morning when it was confirmed in the news.

“I think that’s when it hit me harder, the reality of the entire situation,” Danny stated when we spoke with him this week after learning about the book from his father.

According to Danny, he had difficulty coping with his emotions following the incident. When he began hearing all the speculation about what happened that night, it frustrated him – the speculation, misinformation, and plain nonsense. Prompted by his father, Danny began writing down his thoughts, which turned into a sort of journal. He was subpoenaed to testify at the trial and most recently gave a deposition for the civil suit. After laying out all his thoughts and feelings in his journal, Danny considered transforming his notes into a book, believing it could be a possibility and therapeutic for him and perhaps help others find some peace. As soon as we heard that Danny had written this book, we ordered our copy from Amazon and have now added it to our reading list while in Florida.
