NEW EGYPT, NJ – Lyons Construction and Metal Fab Pro Race Shop have once again joined forces to be the presenting sponsor of the New Egypt Speedway Rookie Sportsman division. This marks the 12th year that Lyons Construction has been associated with the New Egypt Speedway Rookie Sportsman division.
Six drivers have informed the Speedway office of their intention to compete for the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman title, which offers a prize of $750 to the winner, $500 for second place, and $250 for the third place points finishers.
“Bringing new individuals into our sport that has been declining for several years is crucial for the survival of our sport,” said Mike Lyons, the owner of Lyons Construction.
The competitors include Staff Sergeant Walt McIntyre, a retired Army veteran who has served four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. McIntyre is from Levittown, PA. George Kohrmann of Staten Island, NY, a 21-year veteran of the FDNY, also plans to compete. Joseph Brown, the son of former New Egypt Speedway Track Photographer Jim Brown, has purchased a former Pat Wall machine and intends to tackle the New Egypt Speedway Rookie Sportsman division. David Burns, the nephew of New Egypt’s all-time Feature Winner Billy Pauch, plans to race on one of Marty Resnick’s machines and has previous experience in Slingshots. Rick Wegner Sr., the father of former New Egypt Speedway Modified competitor Rick Wegner, was at the New Egypt Speedway Open Practice and aimed to improve as the day progressed. Rob Mancini of Manahawkin, NJ, will also be in action in the sleek yellow-and-black No. 10.
The chase begins in all classes, including the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman division, this Saturday night, April 15, at New Egypt Speedway, where the 358 Modifieds, Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars, and Hammer Sportsman are also competing along with the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club. The pit gates will open at 3 PM, the grandstand gates will open at 4 PM, with hot laps at 5 PM and racing at 6 PM.
Admission to the grandstand is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors aged 65 and above, $10 for teens aged 12 to 15, $10 for military personnel and their spouses with ID, and kids 11 and under are free. Pit admission is $30 with a New Egypt Speedway license and $40 without a license.
New Egypt Speedway is located on Route 539 in New Egypt, NJ, just minutes from Six Flags Great Adventure and the New Jersey Turnpike. It is a 7/16-mile D-shaped dirt oval with state-of-the-art facilities. The speedway features daylight-quality lighting and excellent viewing angles from any seat in the stadium. The grandstands are fully wheelchair accessible with wide, clear, and well-maintained walkways. Concession facilities offer a variety of items, from Jersey Burgers to ice cream treats at family-friendly prices.
